The Enoch Collection

A book your Bible quotes — and then pretends is not there.

Open the Letter of Jude, near the end of your New Testament. In verses 14 and 15 an apostle quotes a prophecy of “Enoch, the seventh from Adam” — word for word, as scripture. The words come from 1 Enoch 1:9. The book they come from is not in your Bible.

It was not always hidden. Early Christian writers cited it. Copies were read aloud. At Qumran, beside the Dead Sea, it was copied again and again, centuries before Christ. Then, one council and one learned opinion at a time, it was set outside the wall — and when a book leaves the approved list, the copying stops.

In one place the copying never stopped. The Ethiopian church kept Enoch in its Bible, in Ge’ez, for more than a thousand years. In 1773 a Scottish traveller carried copies back to Europe; in the 1950s its Aramaic fragments came out of the caves at Qumran. The book the West called lost had been there all along.

These four volumes open the file — with every passage printed with its chapter, the official position stated first and fairly, and the conclusion left where it belongs: with you.

About the archive

The record is public, and almost nobody reads it. The Book of Enoch is in print in several English translations. The Qumran fragments are catalogued and published. The council rulings sit in university libraries. What is missing is not access — it is someone willing to lay it all out in plain order, without the sneer and without the sales pitch.

That is the whole editorial rule of these books: print the passage with its reference. Give the official reading in full. Read the text plainly. Print the strongest objection to our own argument. Then stop — and hand the conclusion to the reader.
